The mission of Hospice Services is to “support and comfort people by providing the highest quality medical, emotional, social, and spiritual care” in partnership with the culturally diverse communities it operates in. One of the ways they do that is through the Community Bereavement Program.

In 2015 Hospice hosted bereavement camps for 23 families, including 26 children, and supported individuals who have lost loved ones with over 1,700 grief counseling sessions through bereavement groups and individual therapy. Counseling was provided at 16 Lake County schools for 253 children who have experienced a death in their family.

The Bereavement program is led by Linda Laing, LMFT, Director of Bereavement Services, and includes Brown, Kathleen Bradley and a group of 37 volunteers, providing 1814 hours annually.

In November 2015 the Memorial Garden at the Bereavement Center on Parallel Drive was opened in a candlelight ceremony where families and friends reflected and remembered their loved ones. The Memorial Garden was a project of Lakeport Rotary.

Bereavement and Grief services are required to be offered by Medicare certified hospice agencies, however many hospice agencies provide the bare minimum to comply with the requirement. As you can see, this is not the case with the Community Bereavement Program at Hospice Services of Lake County.

Although the services are required, they are not funded. The services that Hospice provides are thanks to the donations and sales at the three Thrift Stores (Lakeport, Clearlake, Middletown), and by a grant from the Redbud Healthcare District.

LAKEPORT, Calif. – Hospice Services of Lake County announced that Corrigan Gommenginger has assumed the position of executive director following the retirement of Anja Koot in December.

Gommenginger has worked in the health care industry for nearly a decade, most recently as the executive director of a hospice in western Washington.

He enjoys the challenges presented by constant change in the health care industry and is dedicated to increasing services to the community.

He served on the board of directors for Washington State Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, its certificate of need task force, the public policy and finance committees.

His background extends to accounting and finance and he earned the Certified Hospice Administrator accreditation in 2014.

Born and raised in a rural community in northwest Montana, Gommenginger enjoys hiking, cycling and fishing.

He and his partner, Dave, and their two pet corgis are relocating to Lake County and looking forward to enjoying the natural treasures that Lake County offers.

Hospice of Kitsap launches new service for homebound residents

Aug. 28, 2014

By Tad Sooter of the Kitsap Sun

SILVERDALE — Hospice of Kitsap County has launched a new division that will offer more services to homebound residents.

The state Department of Health issued a license this month to allow Hospice to open the new department, called Peninsula Home Care. Peninsula Home Care staff will assist with nonmedical household tasks like bathing, meal preparation, laundry and errand running.

Hospice Executive Director Corrigan Gommenginger said the nonprofit organization saw a need to give assistance to patients whose family members or caregivers aren’t able to give them full-time help at home.

“Some patients don’t have family,” Gommenginger said.

Hospice of Kitsap is rolling out the new service to its clients this summer and plans to extend the program to the general public in 2015.

The organization hired licensed practical nurse Michael Norton to head the new division. He said Peninsula Home Care will be staffed exclusively by certified nursing assistants. The aides will be on-call 24 hours a day and available for part-time or live-in care. Norton said the size of the staff will depend on the number of patients who request the service.

Clients will be assigned a dedicated caregiver in most cases.

“We’ll try to pair them up to fit situations and personalities,” Norton said.

While aiding with everyday tasks, Peninsula Home Care staff also will keep clients active, arranging transportation and helping with their hobbies.

Gommenginger said Hospice of Kitsap has been planning to add an in-home care unit for the past year. The new license makes it the only agency in the county authorized to provide nonmedical in-home care and in-home hospice care. Hospice of Kitsap also provides inpatient hospice care in Bremerton, and it recently launched a palliative care unit to improve the quality of life for patients suffering from painful illnesses.

Gommenginger said the addition of nonmedical in-home assistance will make it easier to coordinate all-around care for hospice and palliative patients.

Hospice of Kitsap is entering a competitive field with its foray into in-home care. A number of private agencies already offer home assistance in West Sound.

The organization has also faced increasing competition in the area of in-home hospice care, with Franciscan Health System joining the Kitsap market five years ago. Hospice of Kitsap still is the largest provider of hospice care in the county.

Gommenginger said the addition of Peninsula Home Care will broaden and strengthen the organization’s programs. But the main impetus remains improving quality of life for residents.

“We’re doing it to support the patients,” he said.

Nonprofit board member and finance director running for assessor-treasurer

Post by Steve Maynard / The News Tribune on July 13, 2011 at 12:36 pm with 8 Comments »
Corrigan Gommenginger, a Tacoma resident who has been serving of boards of nonprofit community organizations for eight years, announced today he is running for Pierce County assessor-treasurer.

“With America’s economy lagging I felt that it was my time to step up and assist the residents of Pierce County,” Gommenginger said in a news release. “I want to champion tax relief to help our families in the homes they have worked so hard to buy.”

Gommenginger said he also wants to provide tax incentives for businesses to create living-wage jobs. He said the assessor-treasurer’s office can “do more with less.”

Gommenginger, 26, said he works as director of finance for a Tacoma nonprofit community organization. He declined to disclose who he works for at his employer’s request.
Gommenginger has managed finances for NARAL, Ruth Dykeman Children’s Center, Navos and BlueHead Publishing.

Pierce County Councilman Tim Farrell also has announced his candidacy for the assessor-treasurer’s office. The election is scheduled for November 2012.

Dale Washam, the current assessor-treasurer, is the subject of a recall petition campaign.

“He declined to disclose who he works for at his employer’s request.”

I never heard of any legitimate organization not wanting to disclose where a candidate works. Doesn’t the organization have a government, or public relations person?

My guess is he is unemployed. Way to begin a campaign of transparency.

I requested a meeting with Corrigan shortly after he announced his candidacy. I do this with most candidates who may end up representing me. He met with a fellow Midlandite and myself last week in my community, and spent over an hour answering our many questions and sharing information on how he would run the A-T office, if elected.

I asked him who he worked for, and he quickly answered me. I didn’t ask why he chose not to say it in his press release, since I assumed it was related to the restrictions on non-profits endorsing candidates.

If you’re interested in getting to know him, ‘d suggest giving him a call and ask for a meeting. His number is listed in his website (linked in the article).

Corrigan could very much be the Democratic candidate for this race. Compentent, smart and has a background in finance.

He should be taken very seriously.

I was excited to hear that Corrigan was running, considering the opponent Tim Farrell’s recently stated lack of concern about the citizens he has represented (http://www.thenewstribune.com/2011/06/28/1724838/redistricting-shuffles-pierce.html).

As of yet, Corrigan is the only candidate who has any real world experience, and lots of it. He has the bona fide experience necessary for the actual job, which seems to be sorely lacking in so many candidates these days.

The next Assessor-Treasurer is going to need to understand how to clean up messes (cough) Washam (cough) which is exactly what Corrigan has been doing for the majority of his professional career. Every place he goes, he brings stability and growth on stretched budgets, which is why he continues to be so sought after by organizations in the area.

As far as the note about his current non-profit’s non-disclosure, anybody with half a brain would understand that non-profits cannot endorse political candidates. The fact that Corrigan is being attentive to their request is a sign of professionalism and good character in my book.

Thank goodness we have a candidate with some strong real world experience to vote for in this race.

Corrigan attended our June 23rd South Sound Ronald Reagan Republican Club meeting and was very polite to everyone and inquisitive about issues of concern for Pierce County. My guess is we will have many candidates for this office between now and filing in June 2012. My first impression of Corrigan was very positive and I look forward to getting to know him and other candidates who may announce and/or file by June 2012.

I’ve worked alongside Corrigan, and he’s a truly motivated individual. I was really impressed by all that he has achieved–he’s a force to be reckoned with! He’s got a unique viewpoint that I think will work really well for him in office. I’m so glad he’s running!

If he’s so wonderful then why not talk about his job. Words mean nothing what the heck makes him best? I am happy with my reduced taxes. Sounds like another person wanting a government job for the wrong reasons.
